Driving behavior change around food waste and composting.

We are Core Matter. We research the core causes of food waste, then design campaigns, products, programs, and services that help our communities reduce food waste easily.

WHAT WE DO

Design campaigns

We create unique campaigns that capture attention and drive behavior change. Campaigns can demonstrate demand for policy reform.

Create tools and kits

Kits make complicated tasks easy—they provide all necessary resources and a clear set of steps.

Information design

Breaking down complex concepts into something visually engaging and understandable.

Digital experiences

From websites to apps to immersive installations, digital experiences can maximize engagement and provide tools for effective change.

OUR PROCESS

We use a human-centered design process. This is a collaborative process that is driven by human needs. We talk to community members about their lived experiences, and experts like scientists, psychologists, engineers, and designers contribute perspectives and research.

1. Define the problem

CURRENT PROJECTS

GOAL 1: IMPROVE COMPOSTING RATES IN BAY AREA CITIES

A compost education toolkit

Landlord kit

This kit explains the municipal composting system to landlords, helps them enroll, and provides environmental signage and sets of toolkits for each of their units.

Tenant kit

This kit educates tenants on why and how to compost, helps them see the impact of their actions, and provides all supplies they need.

Education app

This app is a digital accompaniment to the tenant kit, providing further resources and info for tenants on why and how to compost.

GOAL 2: EXPAND ACCESS TO CITY COMPOST ACROSS THE U.S.

Campaign and tracking website

Creating friendly competition, this site gives each state a grade for how many of their residents have access to composting. The site also allows visitors to email their representatives to demand access to composting.

Advocacy toolkit

This toolkit provides passionate composting advocates with guidance on how to generate community support for municipal composting and demonstrate community demand to policymakers.
